Here are some basic steps to spending quiet time with God.
Step 1
Make a commitment to put God first. This may seem obvious, but there needs to be a clear decision to put God first in your daily agenda. This means spending time with God is a top priority in your day. An indication that you have made this commitment is you are willing to give up some daily luxuries so that your time with God comes first.
Step 2
Find a quiet place. This may be tough. However, you must find a place where God can speak to you without any distractions. It may mean getting to work 15 minutes earlier and spending time in your car with God. It may mean getting up a few minutes earlier before everyone else wakes up. It may mean visiting a local coffee shop. Wherever it is, be faithful.
Step 3
Pray and listen. Before you read your Bible ask God to speak to you through His word. Ask God to give you ears to sense his voice. So many times we spend all the time doing all the talking. Learn to recognize God's still quiet voice and you will be amazed!
Step 4
Read the Bible. You might choose a Bible reading plan, or you may choose a book in the Bible and go through it. What's important is you take the time to digest each verse. This is not a race! Maybe all you can process is a short paragraph, or maybe it's a chapter, whatever it is the important thing to remember is God is driving the agenda. Incidentally, never substitute God's word for a great devotional book. Devotions are great, but they are not the Bible.
Step 5
Use God's word as your prayer guidebook. This is powerful. As God speaks to you through His word, use Gods word as your prayer language. For example, if you read the words of Jesus, "If you love me obey my commandments" your prayer can be something like "God, I want to love you everyday. Help me to obey you faithfully." This will transform your life!
